Laboratory Research Technician IV



A Research Technician IV position is available in the da Silva lab of the University of Pittsburgh, Ophthalmology Department. The research will focus on tissue culture work related to hiPSCs-derived human 3D retinal organoids for studies of molecular mechanisms underlying retina/fovea development and disease. The Res. Lab. Tech IV will play a key role in leading research projects that are already established in the lab, as well new ones closely related.


Job Summary

Performs a variety of independent and complex laboratory work and experiments. Analyzes and interprets data, compiles results, and prepares reports. Maintains inventory, ordering, and logs. Writes manuscripts and grant proposals and prepares data visualizations.


Essential Functions

Experience with tissue culture work is essential. Experience maintaining hiPSCs specifically is highly desirable. Strong technical expertise in standard cellular and molecular biology including, but not limited to, histological analysis via in situ hybridization or immunohistochemistry, light, fluorescence and confocal microscopy, nucleic acid (DNA and RNA) isolation, qRT-PCR, and basic cloning and analysis are required.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: (1) Design, perform, and oversee experiments and data collection to ensure data integrity, quality control, and protocol compliance within the scope of multiple projects. (2) Performance of experiments in the areas of reprogramming, maintenance, CRISPR/Cas9-based gene editing of hiPSCs, and cell culture of 3D retinal organoids from hiPSCs. (3) Analysis of experimental data and interpretation of results; compilation of results; writing reports and summaries of findings; preparing data, graphs, and tables to properly document experimental results for publication. (4) Ensure proper care, use, and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotion of continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices. (5) Keep detailed, accurate, and timely data and log books. (6) Maintain lab and chemical inventory. (7) Performance of miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned, including but not limited to writing and editing research papers and grants, instructing/teaching junior lab members, and presenting at scientific meetings. (8) Has record of peer-reviewed publications.

Qualification of candidate: minimum of Bachelor’s degree in the Biological sciences.


Physical Effort

Ability to sit under a dissection microscope for long periods of time, with pauses in between, is helpful.
