Job Description

The Bloch School of Management's Business Administration department is seeking a Graduate Academic Advisor with the right combination of skills to positively impact the educational journey of our graduate students. Working at UMKC means being a part of Kansas City's only public urban research university. Finally, the ideal candidate provides encouragement, personalized guidance, and creates a supportive environment to ensure the success of our students.

  • Guides students in developing and accomplishing educational plans. Advises students about scholastic programs and academic progress. Provides information to students regarding university resources to enhance academic success and problem-solving.
  • Performs routine to complex tasks as assigned using existing procedures.
  • Develops implementation plans for various programs/projects.
  • Performs a variety of standard assignments and responsibilities and makes recommendations for improvement/efficiency, resourcing, etc., as necessary.
  • Uses existing procedures to solve standard problems.
  • Analyzes information (e.g., academic-related, student-related) and uses standard practices to make informed judgments and recommendations.
  • Impacts own work team.
  • Exchanges straightforward information, asks questions, and checks for understanding.
  • Develops working relationships with internal parties and external parties as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Student contact and advising regarding graduate degree programs and student progress.
  • Maintain electronic student files and paper files to ensure that each student has completednecessarydegree, graduation, course equivalencies, and petition requirements.
  • Assist sponsored international students with necessary correspondence and consistent communication regarding class scheduling.
  • Assist with graduations and other on-campus events as needed.
  • Participate in course rotation planning and associated curriculum reviews.
  • Works within standardized procedures and practices to achieve objectives and meet deadlines in accordance with established priorities, timelines, funding limitations, etc.
  • May mentor (or supervise as needed) others in completing program/project duties.
Shift

Typical work hours are 8:00am to 5:00pm. There will be some scheduling in the evening and on weekends for event related activities (graduation ceremony, student orientation, etc.). A hybrid work schedule is available after training.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least two years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A Master's Degree in a related field
  • Prior experience working in an academic advising role or related field.
  • Knowledge of academic program requirements.
Anticipated Hiring Range

Anticipated starting salary: $50,367 - $58,000 annually, commensurate with education, experience, and internal equity.
