Lead Custodian – 2nd Shift

The Unified School District of De Pere is seeking an experienced School Custodian who has experience in a Lead position. The person in this position would be the Lead Custodian for the 2nd shift working with 3 other Custodians. It is not a supervisor position, but the person in this position does provide direction for the 2nd shift staff. This is a “working Lead” position as the Lead and the other 3 Custodians would each have their own area of cleaning responsibility. This is NOT an entry-level position. We are looking for an individual with school Custodial or closely related experience along with previous experience in a Lead or related position.


Position to start as soon as possible. Work hours are 2:30 – 11:00 p.m. when school is in session and 6 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. when school is not in session. Pay is $18.81 per hour plus a $0.40 per hour shift differential when working 2nd Shift. Location:

School as assigned.

Reports To:

Assistant Director of Building and Grounds; receives day-to-day direction from Custodian I and Building Principal. 

 

May Provide Direction To:

Assigned Custodian IIIs.

 

 

General Qualifications

 

1.         High school degree / GED, and two years of progressive occupational experience or directly related Vocational Degree and one year of progressive occupational experience.

2.        Ability to work independently -- must demonstrate self-motivation.

3.        Ability to operate simple equipment, re:  buffers, waxers and related devices.

4.        Ability to read simple and direct instructions.

5.        Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends/on-call hours.

6.        Tolerance for and ability to work with chemicals, disinfectants, waxes.

7.        Ability to lift 50 pounds loading and unloading for periods up to one hour, 100 pounds infrequently.  Physical capabilities include bending, twisting, repetitive side-to-side motion and repetitive wrist motion, as well as the ability to reach, carry, push, pull, lift and handle item(s) weighing up to100 pounds while performing work duties.  Position requires unrestricted mobility on a regular and consistent basis for the majority of the workday.

8.        Some specific demonstrable knowledge with regard to entry-level facilities maintenance, cleaning and related equipment.

9.        First aid and CPR certification

 

Additional “Preferred” Qualifications:

 

1.        Demonstrated work experience of facilitating regular and special building needs.

 

Position Typical Duties and Responsibilities: 

It is understood that individual positions covered by this job description may place significantly more emphasis on some duties over others. 

 

1.        This position is responsible for providing and ensuring overall building security:

A.      Locks and unlocks facility as needed and assigned; supports facility lock-down.  Responsible at end of day for ensuring that all doors, windows, and other access points are locked.

  1. Ensuring that all lights, motors, electrical appliances and the like are on or off as appropriate, and that all security devices and alarms are on;
  2. Questioning students and adults who may be in the halls without apparent purpose.

2.        All duties of the Custodian III as well as qualifications are automatically included within the duties of the Custodian II.   It is to be expected that these duties will comprise from 50 to 75 percent of the typical workday.  While they may vary by facility and day, emphasis includes general cleaning, floor care and maintenance, special events set up, and the like.  Involves security and periodic project activities of the Custodian I.

3.        Communicating as needed with Custodian I and Custodian III and others:

  1. Acting as an information conduit between the Custodian I, Assistant Director of Buildings & Grounds and building administration and the Custodian III; forwards reported or observed failures and performance standards/complaints;
  2. Seeking an forwarding information from teaching and other professionals and all staff;
  3. Passing on safety, security, supply and like information to both the principal and Custodian I or Custodian II as appropriate and Assistant Director of Building & Grounds as appropriate.
  4. Where direction is provided, forwards information regarding that staff and their absences and tardiness to Custodian I;
  5. Forwarding information with regard to any safety or security issues, as a very minimum directly reporting any apparent safety hazard to Custodian I and if not immediately dealt with, to the Assistant Director of Buildings & Grounds and the building principal;
  6. Reporting any actual or imminent physical plant failures including HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning), water, electrical, or the like;
  7. Providing direct support to kitchen and lunch room cleanup, including the cleaning of equipment, trash receptacles, floors, tables and the like;
  8. Provide direct assistance to the Custodian I or the Custodian III as needed and/or as directed.

4.        Responsibilities include making minor repairs within the individual positions’ expertise and as directed by the building principal/associate principal, Assistant Director of Buildings & Grounds or Custodian I, including but not limited to:

  1. General 110 switches, ballasts, like-electrical maintenance;
  2. General maintenance and simple equipment replacement i.e. soap dispensers, towel dispensers, filters, nuts, bolts, screws and the like.

5.        Snow and ice removal for evening events.

6.        Provides training and support to Custodian IIIs.

7.        All other duties as assigned.
