East Stroudsburg University is hiring a Dean for the College of Health Sciences! Located in the beautiful Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, ESU's proximity to New York City and Philadelphia provides convenient access to internships, careers and social activities. Just minutes from campus are the country's largest water parks, scenic Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area, Appalachian Trail, and other opportunities for recreational fun.

As the Dean of the College of Health Sciences, you will lead the college in developing inter-organizational collaboration to harness the knowledge and skills of the area's health services professionals and educational systems to create opportunities for student learning and job preparation, partnerships for faculty research, and improvements to the quality of life of the Pocono Region. Through this collaboration, you will facilitate solutions to the region's health challenges. You will be an active member of the College of Health Sciences team and will work closely with the Provost to provide leadership for six academic departments (i.e., Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Health Studies, Nursing, Physical Education Teacher Education, and Communication Sciences and Disorders). You will thrive in this role if you like utilizing your experience serving as a higher education administrator while facilitating opportunities for partnerships between schools, community-based healthcare agencies, social service organizations, businesses, and the ESU health sciences faculty, undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students. To be successful in this role, you must have strong leadership skills, and knowledge and skills in the areas of health services and educational systems.

Your normal hours will be Monday to Friday 8 am – 4:30 pm, but you may have to flex your schedule from time to time based on the needs of the business to be a true Dean. What Will I Do At ESU? (AKA Essential Duties)
Budgeting & Planning
  • Manage the planning, budgeting, and allocation process for the college assuring timely and accurate completion of all University requirements, providing assistance and guidance as needed.
  • Recommend and advocate for changes in staff and resource allocation based on department/college plans and changing University needs.
  • Prepare and present budget proposals for the college based on department/college plans and budget requests.
  • Allocate operating funds to departments following receipt of budget allocation from the Provost.
  • Monitor and approve all expenditures in the college to assure adherence to budgetary allocation limits.
  • Participate in university-wide strategic planning representing both the needs of the college and the University.
Program Development & Evaluation
  • Provide leadership in curriculum development at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels.
  • Create a vision and strategy to build the ESU College of Health Sciences as the premier regional academic institution for clinically-based health service programs (i.e., clinical exercise physiology, exercise science, nursing, and speech pathology), teaching certification programs (i.e., physical education and health education), and public health (i.e., community health education and health services administration).
  • Facilitate and oversee department five-year program reviews to assure quality and completeness.
  • Encourage and facilitate the development and implementation of Outcomes Assessment activities at departmental and college levels.
  • Work with departments to evaluate programs in terms of state objectives of the University and the State System and when necessary, plan improvements in existing programs or new programs to meet objectives.
  • Monitor program operations and development to assure compliance with accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Partner with the ESU Division of Research and Economic Development to develop the campus as a center of entrepreneurial practice across the colleges.
Personnel Supervision & Evaluation
  • Consistent with the Collective Bargaining Agreements, coordinate with department chairs the assignment of faculty so that workload is equitable, students' needs are met and faculty are teaching in areas of competence.
  • Monitor faculty qualifications for employment and assignment.
  • Encourage, facilitate and recognize all scholarly work and contributions of faculty with the college.
  • Participate in the evaluation of all faculties within the college, both tenured and non-tenured, in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Assist faculty members in meeting their needs for professional development, training, retraining, or continuing education.
  • Effectively collaborate and communicate with internal and external constituencies to develop the college's strategic plan, in accordance with the university's new strategic plan.
Organizing & Directing
  • Develop cooperative educational programs and policies among the departments of the college and with the various departments that offer courses to the college majors.
  • Recommend faculty members to serve on the appropriate committees.
  • In consultation with department chairs and program directors, review and approve transfer credit evaluations of incoming students. Evaluate academic records and approve program completion of graduating students.
What We're Looking For (AKA Qualifications)
  • An earned doctorate degree in the health sciences or a related field from an accredited institution, a record of teaching, scholarship, and service, appropriate for the rank of professor in a health sciences field.
  • 8+ years of previous work experience serving as a higher education administrator, preferably as a dean or department chair.
  • 3+ years of experience with accreditation and assessment of student and program learning outcomes appropriate to the fields of study housed within the college.
  • Demonstrable record of developing relationships within the health professions at the local, regional, national and international levels.
  • Exhibit a record of collaboration with other colleges to establish innovative interdisciplinary degree programs that provide health science students with knowledge and marketable, job-ready skills upon graduation.
  • Strong goal achievement orientation, pushes for results.
  • Ability to quickly build rapport while also building constructive partnerships with health service systems, school systems and various non-profit enterprises in the region to create advanced experiential learning opportunities for students while facilitating faculty scholarship and growth in extramural funding.
  • Demonstrable record of identifying, recruiting, and retaining students representing a multicultural world who by background, motivation, and commitment can benefit from higher education.
  • Strong team-building, planning, and creative problem-solving skills plus the ability to work well with internal academic colleagues and external boards, volunteers, organizations and individuals.
  • Excellent skills in interpersonal, organizational, and written/oral communications; effectively communicates in a variety of formal presentation settings.
  • Strong use of technology and related skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
  • Have knowledge and commitment in the use of data analytics software to achieve objectives and demonstrate competence in assessment and Continuous Improvement programs.
