The Dining Services Department at Salisbury University is accepting applications for a Cook position in Dining Services.
Primary Job Duties: Prepares, seasons, cooks, fries and bakes food according to standard recipes. Measures, weighs and combines ingredients for quality preparation of meats, vegetables, salads and beverages in accordance with established recipes. Operates a variety of manual and/or automated kitchen equipment such as ovens, grills, toasters, fryers, mixers, etc. Prepares food items for serving; Assures optimal quality of food throughout preparation and service. Ensures safe and sanitary conditions are maintained by cleaning and sanitizing food preparation equipment and surrounding areas in accordance with policy and practice established by the department leader and Wicomico County Department of Health. Provides guidance, training and support to others to achieve objectives.
Minimum Qualifications: Three years of commercial or institutional cooking experience required. Current valid Serve Safe certification or ability to obtain this certification within 3 months of hire.
Thorough knowledge of food preparation methods. Thorough knowledge of and skill in applying the procedures and standards of quality and quantity food selection, food preservation, meal service and portion control. General knowledge of principles and practices of sanitation and safety in cooking areas. Skill in proper food handling and preparation; in garnishing pans of food for service; in the operation of food preparation equipment. Ability to read and write; to follow and adjust recipes; to provide guidance to food service personnel; to perform basic arithmetic computations; to prepare food using assigned utensils, appliances and equipment; to work in irritating environments and adverse temperature conditions; ability to lift, transport and stock food service supplies and materials. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
This position is a full-time, non-exempt State position with full benefits. Starting salary is $37,418 annually which is approximately $17.94 per hour with a 2.5% increase after a six-month probationary period is satisfactorily completed. Work schedule will vary based upon the needs of the University and may include daytime, evening and weekend hours. This position is also considered essential, which means the position is expected to report for work in emergency situations such as extreme weather conditions when the campus may be closed.
