Overview
The Loading Dock Attendant will support the logistics needs of the three groups that currently reside in Guyot Hall and who will move to the new Environmental Sciences building in 2025: the department of Geosciences, the High Meadows Environmental Institute, and the department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. This position will be responsible for coordinating the inbound deliveries and outbound shipments of scientific supplies, equipment, and samples. This position will also be responsible for keeping shared dock and building spaces in the Environmental Sciences building in good working order.
Responsibilities
- Daily pickup and drop-off of packages for Guyot Hall. Sort, distribute, deliver and pickup mail and packages to the three units in Guyot directly to labs and mailboxes with minimal guidance.
- Process all deliveries and ship items as needed. Ensure frozen/chilled shipments are handled properly.
- Communicate daily with administrative staff regarding deliveries and/or visits by service technicians.
- Assist with gas deliveries by working with vendors and by managing the gas cylinder shed, ensuring that empty cylinders are returned promptly.
- Use of pallet jack and/or carts for oversized shipments; load and unload boxes as needed.
- Use of hand tools to assemble/disassemble crates, furniture, etc
- Occasional event set up and take down assistance; occasional evening and/or weekend hours may be required.
- Coordinate the usage of departmental vehicles by filling with gas, pickup/dropping off vehicles for scheduled maintenance, clearing off snow, and cleaning vehicles as necessary after field work.
- Transport samples from offsite storage to and from Guyot Hall and the ES building.
- Work with administrative staff to keep supply cabinets stocked and in good condition.
- Assist with the inventory of natural history collections and scientific equipment; assist with annual capital asset inventory.
- Keep shared building areas in good condition; work with administrative staff on disposal of unneeded items through Resource Recovery.
- Assist with lab clean-outs by ensuring the safe and proper disposal of equipment and supplies and coordinating with EHS and Resource Recovery as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Proficiency computer skills, including MS Office (Word, Excel and etc.) plus web-based programs.
- Must be flexible and have a great customer service attitude, along with a “front of the house” face for our Faculty/Researchers/Students/Visitors.
- Proven ability for attention to detail, multi-tasking, problem solving, and prioritizing jobs.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work successfully in both a team environment and individual basis.
- Demonstrated ability to be flexible and successfully work in a constantly changing environment, which may require extended hours during peak times of the year.
- Demonstrated ability to work with other departments sharing the dock area.
Essential Physical Requirements
