Examples of Work
Comply with and enforce state statues and Departmental/Institutional Rules and Regulations. Maintain responsibility for the total operation of the housing unit. Ensure sanitation is maintained at a high level by conducting daily inspections, sanitation reports and correcting deficiencies immediately. Observe, evaluate and document subordinate staff performance. Provide on -the-job training and coordinate training for all assigned staff. Effectively communicate all relevant information to line staff, supervisors and other departments. Chair Unit Classification and Unit Disciplinary Committee. Render decisions that are consistent with department policy and the philosophy of the NDCS and the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women (NCCW). Process inmate grievances according to established protocols. Ensure responses detailed (addresses all elements of the grievance), accurate and in accordance with policy. Prepare suggested responses to Inmate Request within the established deadline. Complete investigations as assigned. Learn and perform the duties and responsibilities of the Unit Administrator's office. Demonstrate leadership, commitment and professionalism on a daily basis. Leadership must be consistent with Department's mission and vision.
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS: A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, behavioral sciences, human services or a related field and one year of corrections experience, including supervisory experience; OR Associate’s degree in criminal justice, behavioral sciences, human services or related field and three years of corrections experience, including supervisory experience; OR five years of corrections experience, including supervisory experience. No felony or domestic abuse related convictions.
PREFERRED: Experience working in NDCS Custody and/or Unit Management. Bilingual English/Spanish desired and assessed.
OTHER: Transcripts required prior to appointment. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam and, at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of: supervisory and management techniques; the unit management concept; institutional and departmental rules and regulations counseling methods; inmate/offender rehabilitative programs; acceptable sanitation and food service standards; caseload management.
Ability to: supervise all the activities of a unit; monitor and evaluate legal offender rehabilitative progress; judge when and to what extent the intervention of security staff is needed; communicate effectively with inmates/offenders of diverse ethnic, racial and educational backgrounds; train and delegate subordinate unit personnel; work closely with the unit management team to accomplish inmate/offender rehabilitative objectives.
