Help improve the quality of life for the residents and property owners of Maplewood by providing excellent winter snow removal services, improving road conditions, and maintaining the City's storm sewer network. Maplewood's Public Works Street Maintenance Trainee position is full-time. The ideal candidate will have some knowledge and willingness to learn and grow in a wide range of duties from street and storm sewer maintenance and repair, to heavy equipment operation. Paid training is available for obtaining your Class B license within 6 months of hire. The general workweek is Monday through Friday with some great flexibility--Spring/Summer hours--four 10-hour days; Fall/Winter hours--five 8-hour days Major Areas of Accountability Maintains and repairs city streets including patching holes and filling cracks using cold or hot mix. Repairs shoulders and curbs, treats surfaces and prepares streets for overlays. Operates a variety of equipment to maintain streets including: dump truck with attachments, sweeper, backhoe, front-end loader, skid loader with attachments, asphalt roller, vibratory compactors, pumps, jet/vac, small tractors and mowers, chainsaws, and other power tools. Plows city streets to remove snow, applies salt and sand, and cleans streets with a sweeper and flusher. Operates a jackhammer to remove concrete, asphalt, curbs, gutters and sidewalks; may grade gravel roads. Works with concrete to repair and maintain concrete sidewalks, curbs and catch basins. Cleans catch basins and grates; cleans, installs, and repairs utility covers and culverts. Repairs, rebuilds and constructs catch basins and utility holes. Installs and repairs sections of storm sewer lines and cleans storm sewers using a jetter/vacuum. Operates a chain saw and hydraulic pole saw to cut down or trim trees; chips branches, cuts tree into logs, and picks up and hauls brush. Responds to emergency callouts. Hauls gravel, wood chips, dirt, and other materials. Performs inspections and minor preventive maintenance on Street Division vehicles and equipment. Straightens, repairs, and replaces street signs that are damaged and performs yearly condition inspections of all City signs. Fabricates and installs street signs. Mows boulevards and other city properties. Sprays weed killer along curbs, in cracks on the street, and along the median; removes trash and hazards in roadways. Sets up proper signing for traffic through our work zones using cones, flashers, barricades and signs. Uses a manual striping machine to stripe parking lots and crosswalks. Locates and marks storm sewers and catch basins in response to "gopher-one" calls and places "gopher-one" calls before digging. Completes required forms and maintains records. Assists other departments as needed with miscellaneous projects. May perform some welding and/or fabrication of equipment or devices to assist with the work. May perform occasional concrete work, carpentry, painting, and plumbing on City buildings, fixtures, and/or equipment as needed. Performs other duties as needed or assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Considerable knowledge of street and storm sewer maintenance and repair operations. Working knowledge of materials, methods, and practices used in street and storm sewer maintenance including snow removal. Working knowledge of traffic laws as applied to operating trucks and heavy equipment. Working knowledge of the safety precautions necessary to perform street and storm sewer maintenance work; particularly when working near underground utilities. Considerable ability to safely operate heavy and light equipment to maintain and repair streets and storm sewers, haul material, remove snow, clean and apply salt and sand to City streets. Considerable ability to perform heavy manual labor requiring continual use of large motor skills; standing, walking or sitting for long periods; and frequent bending, stooping, shoveling, twisting, turning, crouching, stretching, reaching, pushing and pulling to perform the work. Considerable ability to regularly lift, carry, push, pull, drag and maneuver objects weighing up to 75 pounds, and up to 100 pounds with assistance. Considerable ability to work with exposure to loud noises from operating equipment. Considerable ability to see during the day and night to drive vehicles and operate equipment. Considerable ability to work outside year-round, including during inclement weather and temperature extremes. Considerable ability to maintain a good driving record and drive safely and legally. Working ability to use fine motor skills and coordination to fabricate signs and manipulate hand tools and small parts. Working ability to work with or around irritants and fumes when repairing streets, cleaning storm sewers, operating heavy and light equipment and applying weed killer. Working ability to work in confined spaces such as a storm sewer or utility hole and to safely use hand tools. Working ability to work with equipment causing vibrations such as a jackhammer, chain saw, tamper and compactor. Working ability to communicate effectively with City staff and the public and to operate a radio and telephone. Working ability to read and follow written and oral instructions and to hear at a level sufficient to communicate with staff. Working ability to work and maintain balance at heights of 8-12 feet occasionally when tree trimming or working on ladders.
Minimum & Preferred Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS-- Must have no suspensions or revocations on driver's license records within the past two years. Must meet D.O.T. Drug and Alcohol testing requirements Preferred Qualifications Possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Commercial driver's license (Class B). Must obtain a tanker endorsement within six months of hire and maintain thereafter. One year of street maintenance or construction experience including operation of light equipment, or equivalent experience and/or training.
